Scope and target of equity and diversity working group

Dear all,
We need to reach a consensus on the scope and target of our efforts in Equity and Diversity working group. Gabrielle refereed to it in her list of questions "what kind of inequities do we want to focus on? in which contexts? in which countries?"Here are my perspectives.

Considering the international nature of our group I suggest to target the equity in international level. I mean not to limit ourselves only to some countries. I think we can examine equity and diversity in terms of gender and nationality. They type of equity I believe can be the main focus is equity in access to opportunities for capacity building and empowerment in health research. We can can contribute to providing answers to following questions:

1.Do male and female health researchers have equal access to opportunities for capacity building and empowerment in health research, nationally and internationally? How can we tackle this issue?

2. Do health researchers form developed and developing countries have have equal access to opportunities for capacity building and empowerment in health research internationally? How can we tackle this issue?

Looking forward your comments

Hi Nastaran, I think your suggestion of looking at opportunities for capacity building and empowerment in health research from an international perspective both in relation to gender and in relation to developed and developing countries is very important, and I agree with you very much.

I was wondering whether we should also include looking at the opportunities for capacity buiding and empowerment for health promotion practioners? It would broaden our scope quite a bit but
I think that health promotion practitioners play such an important role and have equal needs and we have the opportunity of highlighting inequities in relation to this group of professionals too, both in relation to gender and nationality.
What do you think?

It was good to read the posting from James concerning the National Health Equity Network and the National Indigenous Health Equalities Council in Australia.I think it would be really good if we could link up with them. We need to have communication and exchange of ideas with other groups working with issues of equity and diversity.

I found a website for the University of Adelaide where they strongly promote the principles of equity and diversity as part of their university policy They have a Gender, Equity and Diversity Committee and some good links. Here's the link to the website:

I also found a website for Berkeley University called "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion@UC Berkeley", with a document entitled "The Challenge of a Diverse and Inclusive University Campus Community". They talk about the importance of inclusion as a fundamental aspect of equity. The link to their website is:

Looking forward to hearing your comments and those of others.

Best wishes
from Gabrielle
